Craps Glossary
Definitions for the terms used when playing craps.
Some of the terms used in this guide may have left you a bit confused. Don’t fear! This section is designed to clear things up. Obviously, knowing the ins and outs of the language of craps is not as important online as it is in land-based casinos, but if you want to get real feel for the game, it’s more than worthwhile brushing up on these phrases.
- Backline:
- Another term for the don’t pass line.
- Bank craps:
- The proper name for the version of craps played online.
- Bet:
- How much a player wagers on one outcome.
- C and E bet:
- A proposition bet on any craps, and on eleven.
- Chips:
- Another word for money in casinos. Some customers prefer to refer to their casino balance in chips instead of currency.
- Come out roll:
- This is the first roll of a game. There are three possible results from this roll: The first is that a seven or eleven is rolled and pass bets win; the second is that a two, three, eleven, or twelve is rolled and pass bets lose. The third eventuality is that the point is established.
- Crap:
- The numbers of two, three, and twelve.
- Crap out:
- This is when a shooter misses the point by rolling a seven before they rolled the point again.
- Deposit:
- The act of transferring money from a bank account to a casino account.
- Dice games:
- Games played with dice, including craps and others such as sic bo. These games tend to be very popular in American land-based casinos.
- Double odds:
- An odds bet that’s twice as large as the original pass/come bet. Some casinos allow higher odds such as five times, ten times, or even one hundred times odds.
- House Edge:
- The mathematical advantage that a casino has over a player on a specific bet.
- Inside:
- The numbers five, six, eight, and nine.
- Layout:
- The graphic image of the table surface. Includes all of the areas where bets can be placed.
- Odds:
- This is how payouts are measured. The first number is how much you’ll receive if you win when placing the second number. Example: 5:6 – For every six chips you bet, you’ll get another five when you win.
- Payout percentage:
- The percent of each dollar returned to players in a game.
- Point:
- The number that is established on the first roll (come out roll); it can be four, five, six, eight, nine, or ten. In order for pass bets to win, this number must be rolled again before a seven.
- Shooter:
- The person rolling the dice. Some online casinos let you be the shooter. It’s a nice addition to the game and helps to recreate some of the excitement found in land-based casinos.
- Table limits:
- The minimum and maximum bets that a customer can make on a given bet. Standard limits are $1 to $250, but these can often be raised for high rollers.
As craps is often overcomplicated by players and dealers, even the rolls have been given names. These do not need to be learnt to play, but can allow you to re-create some of the glamour and fun often found in casinos (and in many films).
